What is Ground Turmeric?
Turmeric is a flowering plant of the ginger family, the rhizomes of which are used in cooking. The rhizomes are used fresh or boiled in water and dried, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a colouring and flavouring agent in many Asian cuisines. It has a warm, bitter, black pepper like flavour and an earthy mustard like aroma.
Where does Turmeric Come From?
The majority of Turmeric is found in India, but there is also a large amount in Thailand and smaller amounts in other tropical countries of Asia. The name may derives from Middle English or Early Modern English as Turmeryte or Tarmaret. It may be of Latin origin, Terra Merita (Meritorious Earth).
