What is Ground Ginger?
Ginger is an example of a rhizome, which is where the main stem of the plant runs underground horizontally and can often be eaten. Ginger is widely used as a spice and in folk medicine. It is a fragrant spice; the ground spice mainly being used as a flavouring in baking such as gingerbread, cookies and cakes.
Where does Ground Ginger Come From?
Ginger originated in Maritime Southeast Asia and was domesticated first by the Austronesian peoples. It is now grown mainly in Asia and Africa, with India growing almost half of the world total.
